The Salvation Army Emergency Overnight Warming Center will be open tonight, Friday, February 24 and tomorrow, Saturday, February 25 due to predicted extreme cold. Local residents in need are encouraged to come to its Warming Center located at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway in Springfield.
“Just when we thought spring was here, mother nature had other plans,” said Major Mike Mills, Corps Officer. “Hopefully this will be the last time this service is needed this season, but we are prepared should it be needed again.”
The Salvation Army’s Warming Center will be open tonight and tomorrow night from 7:00p.m. to 7:30a.m. The Warming Center opens when the National Weather Service predicts the wind chill will reach 14° F or below. However, due to scheduling conflicts, The Salvation Army will be open in place of a partner organization that would normally be open.
“We are glad we have such great partners in the community that we can be here for, just like they were here for us earlier in the season,” said Mills.
The warming center has been open seven nights this season. In total 249 nights of shelter have been provided to 116 unduplicated at The Salvation Army’s Overnight Warming Center.
