The Salvation Army will help nearly 1,000 children over the next two weeks with back-to-school supplies, new shoes, clothing and haircuts. The first of two distribution days will take place tomorrow, August 2 from 9:00a.m. to 10:15a.m. for students attending outlying schools in Greene & Christian counties. Distribution for students in Springfield Public Schools will take place on Friday, August 12 from 9:00a.m. to 2:30p.m. Both distributions will be held at The Salvation Army’s main office at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway.
“We are so grateful to be able to provide these children with the things they need for back-to-school,” Judy Mills, Springfield Corps Officer said. “With the help of the community, these kids will have a great start to the new school year.”
Children will receive a new backpack and school supplies. They will also receive a voucher to purchase new shoes at Wal-Mart, a clothing voucher to The Salvation Army Thrift Store, and a free haircut courtesy of the Missouri College of Cosmetology and Academy of Hair Design.
In addition to the supplies and clothing, each child signed-up through the back-to-school program will also be receiving a new winter coat. Coats will be ordered by size and distributed to the children at the beginning of October.
Families needing assistance signed-up over a two week period from July 11 to July 22. The number of children being assisted this year is similar to those helped last year.
Families who missed the sign-up period may call our office on August 15 to see if additional backpacks and supplies are available. Backpacks and supplies will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. Families need to be prepared to bring a photo ID, social security cards for everyone in the household and proof of residency.
Donations are still being accepted for back-to-school, including monetary donations to help with the cost of the coats. For more information or to make donation, please call 417-862-5509.
